Anki (how to learn and remember things the easy way)

My friends who are currently using Anki : Gilles, Tony, Regis, JB

I Personnally use Anki to remember :

  • chinese vocabulary (entered by myself : pinyin, tones, meanings and synonyms)
    • I strongly suggest to use the pinyin toolkit plugin, to colorize tones and translate automatically on input
  • english vocabulary (entered by myself)
  • french vocabulary (entered by myself)
  • geography (countries, capitals, maps, regions of china, all converted from some mnemosyne public decks)
  • shortcuts for all my preferred apps (firefox, kde, emacs, vim)
    • I strongly suggest to use anki for remembering shortcuts, this is so life-changing!
  • name of people in my remote family (like the name of the 3 daughters of a remote uncle, that I always forgot)
  • song lyrics (this is life-changing, learn by rote your preferred lyrics, see special section below)
  • technical/geek stuff

I do not use pre-built decks, except for geography

My progress

I strongly suggest to learn only a few new cards every day, and really do it every day. This is to make sure your daily load won’t push you to give up anki. The key to get the best from anki is perseverance! Personally I learn 20 new cards per day. My daily load is around 120 cards per day, which takes me about 30 minutes to review every morning.

  • goal : remembered 5000 cards in february 2010
  • already remembered 2000 cards in august 2009
  • already remembered 1000 cards in july 2009
  • started in may 2009

Learn and remember song lyrics

I created special models called “Enumeration” to be able to input ordered lists of words and remember them easily with Anki. This is particularly useful for learning lyrics.

Have a try! I have uploaded a shared desk in anki. Just go to File > Download > Shared Deck, and search for “song” you will find it.

Currently it contains the lyrics of a few songs, including with or without you from U2 :-)

Advanced Anki

If you already use Anki for a few weeks, you will for sure have some difficulties. This is normal, because in fact formulating knowledge into easy to remember questions/answers is not so easy...

Save your time, just read this page about the 20 most common mistakes you will do! I did most of them, and learn a lot every day I reread this page.
